🇲🇹 Nationalist Party

About Ian

Member of Parliament, Podiatrist, and passionate advocate for better healthcare and communities across Malta.

Ian Vassallo Hagi — Il-Ħagi

Ian Vassallo Hagi, widely known as "Il-Ħagi", is a Member of Parliament for the Nationalist Party (PN), elected in the 2022 general election. He represents two electoral districts: District 7 (Rabat, Dingli, Żebbuġ, Mtarfa, and Mdina) and District 12 (Mġarr, Mellieħa, and San Pawl il-Baħar).

By profession, Ian is a qualified and practising Podiatrist — earning him the affectionate title "Il-Podjatra" among constituents. This healthcare background gives him a unique, practical perspective on Malta's health system and the real challenges patients face every day.

In Parliament, Ian serves as the Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Mental Health, where he holds the government to account on healthcare delivery, waiting times, mental health services, and the wellbeing of Malta's most vulnerable citizens.

Roots in Rabat

Before his election to Parliament, Ian served as a Rabat Local Councillor, where he championed local infrastructure improvements, community services, and the preservation of Rabat's historic character. This local government experience gave him direct insight into the day-to-day concerns of ordinary Maltese families.

Healthcare as a Vocation

Ian's clinical background as a podiatrist informs his political priorities. He consistently advocates for:

  • Reducing waiting times for specialist referrals
  • Expanding community-based mental health services
  • Better support for healthcare workers in the public sector
  • Investment in preventative care and health education
  • Accessible primary care facilities in all communities

Mental Health — Breaking the Stigma

One of Ian's most passionate areas of advocacy is mental health. He believes that Malta must invest heavily in community-based mental health support, reduce stigma around mental illness, and ensure that every citizen — regardless of their background — can access the care they need.

Serving His Communities

Ian's approach to politics is fundamentally community-driven. He regularly holds outreach sessions in his districts, meets residents, and ensures their concerns are heard at both local and national levels. Whether it's road safety in Mellieħa, healthcare access in Rabat, or environmental concerns in San Pawl il-Baħar — Ian makes sure every voice counts.
